A PICTURESQUE GATHERING. VERY SUCCESSFUL MEETING. Bounded on three sides by the Waitara River and surrounded by bush-clad hills, the Tara t a 'Domain presented a beautiful scenic retreat yesterday on the occasion of tne annual ath- , letic sports held by the Tarata Club, i Though late In the season, the day was i mild and fine, and a large crowd assembled, I among whom were many visitors. Chopuing I and sawing events took place in a level enclosure, while substantial brush and pole . fences were erected for the horse events. Wide- ! spending kahikatea were utilised for children’s swings, and backed on to the luncheon tent, where an energetic committee of ladles disI trlbuted afternoon tea. The joint secretaries (Messrs. D. Patterson and N. Lawrence), with their committee, had made complete arrangements for the meeting, and the events were decided expeditiously and punctually. The judging and handicapping left nothing to be desired, and th.e officials responsible are to be congratulated on the satisfactory results. The officials for the day were: Handicapper, Mr. C. A. Burke; starter, Mr. F. Spurdie; time-keeper, Mr. A. E. Maetzig; judges. Messrs/ | E Butler, B. Oxenham and H. Lovell (chop'ping), J. Burgess, J. Drummond (running); ‘starter for running, Mr. J. Crowe; chairman 'of committee, Mr. W. Topping; president, Mr. H. Lambert; patron, Mr. H. Waite. Mrs. McRae was in charge of the afternoon tea committee and had a very efficient staff of workers. In the evening a very successful dance was held in the hall, Murfitt’s orchestra supplying the music. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. D. Patterson, N. Lawrence, D. Burr and B. Lawrence, Supper was provided and dancing continue/ till the early hours. Results:—

A very close finish, the winner giving a flr.lßhed display with the axe. Time, 77 l-ssec. Double-handed saw, one cut.—Flrat heat: J. Dodunski and mate (2sec) 1, Hurlihy and mate (Bsec) 2, D. Lambert and inate (6sec) 3. Second heat: Bakewell and mate (Bsec) 1, Fletcher and mate (6sec) 2, O. Downian and mate (6sec) 3. Final : Bakewell and mate 1, Fletcher and mate 2, Dowman and mate 3. Won by five seconda, the second and third pairs being very close. The time was 10sec., which meant rliat the scratch men had to cut their blocks in 2sec.
