SUPPORT FOR TILDEN. CONTROVERSY IN AMERICA. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 22. 8.10 p.m. New York, May 21. The Tilden controversy has developed into an open threat of the defection of the leaders of the pro-Tllden faction, headed by Mr. Edward Conlin (president of the Lawn Tenuis Umpires’ Association), who addressed a letter to the officials of the tennis association, asking how much the latter profited in business through their connection with tennis, and threatening to organise a new association. The letter states: "One interpretation of the amateur rule is applied to Tilden aud another to Watson Washburn, who has admitted his connection with a flrm manufacturing steel tennis rackets. We are entitled to some explanation why Washburn escaped while Tilden has been persecuted. We want peace. We want to play the game. We propose to be loyal to Tilden to the bitter end. We hope, however, that it will not be necessary to organise a national association. It is not the executives, but the players who are in sympathy with Tilden ”
