BURGLARY FAILS.
ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP SA/FE. ARREST OF A SUSPECT. By Telegraph.—'Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Daniel Murray, aged 30, was committed for trial on a charge of breaking and entering the tailoring premises of Owens’ Ltd. with intent to commit a crime. On December I's at 8.50 p.m. an attempt was made to blow open a safe, and the casing was blown off the face of the safe, from which, however, nothing was taken.
Accused was arrested on a charge of vagrancy, and when searched a small piece of wood was found on him. An analysis showed that it had been dipped in gelignite or other explosive, and it was presumed the piece of wood had been used to push gelignite in the door of the safe.
The evidence went to show that accused and a companion visited the Glenmore brick works just before the incident, and subsequently six plugs of gelignite, detonators and 'Several feet of fuse were found to be missing.
