THE VALUE OF PROTECTION HOW BRITAIN IS LOSING. MR. MASSEY IN CANADA. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 27, 5.5 p.m. Quebec, Dec. 26. Mr. W. F. Massey, speaking at the Canadian Club, argued in favour of a protection policy within the Empire It was the aim of the majority of those at the Imperial Conference, he said, to bring into operation the principal of protection. “It is true,” added Mr. Massey, “that we cannot go into it hurriedly, but there is no doubt the measure would be of great benefit to the Empire as a whole when it can be nut into operation satisfactorily.” The unemployment and trade depression in Eqgland could be ascribed to the fact that fifty years ago Britain was the workshop of world and her products were purchased by the majority of foreign nations, while to-day, with Britain a free trade country, foreign manufacturers were producing cheaply for themselves and shipping their surplus to Britain, to the detriment of the British manufacturer.
