SUBMARINE COMMANDER’S SUICIDE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 27, 5.5 p.m. -London. Dec. 26. At the inquest on Engineer -Com «• mander Frederick Robertson, a verdict was returned of suicide while insane. Robertson was commander of a new giant submarine, No. XI, He returned to Chatham after a thirty-eight hour®’ secret Channel trial. The steward took whisky to his cabin next morning and found him in pyjamas dead, lying on a hearthrug, his face covered with blood, and a safety razor blade on the floor. Commodore Fullerton, commanding at Chatham, gave evidence that by the Admiralty’s orders he placed Robertson under arrest aboard the submarine to await court-martial on a disciplinary matter.
Judge Stranger, father-in-law, said Robertson was of the highest character, and had written a book which had gained the Admiralty’s thanks.
