Mr. L. Little, of Messrs. Bellringer Bros., left yesteixiay on a month’s trip to Australia and TasmaniaThe death occurred last week of Mr. James Atkins, one of the Otaki district’s most respected and best known settlers.

Mr. J. W. Black, private secretary to the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir Francis Bell), has been appointed by the Government as one of the four information officers on the staff of the New Zealand Commissioner to the British Empire Exhibition. He has been granted leave of absence, and will sail by the Ruahine on Saturday.

The Rev. O. Blundell left for Auckland yesterday morning to attend the funeral of hrs> father, Mr. Arthur Blundell, whose death occurred early yesterday, Mr, A- Blundell, who was 84 years of age, paid a visit to New Plymouth last April and was at that time in fairly robust health- Recently his strength failed, and he passed away after having been unconscious for several days.

The death occurred at Palmerston Nortn of Lieutenant J- E. Packman, quartermaster of OB Area, 6th Regimental district. He was born in England, and for 21 years was attached to tne Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment. He was for some time stationed in India, and took part in the expedition to Lhasa. Tibet, in 1903-4. He took part in the storming of Gyang-tse-Jong, and for his services was mentioned in di'spatt'hes' and awarded the D-C.M. He came to New Zealand in 19-13, and received an appointment as sergeant instructor on the New Zealand staff. He was promoted temporary lieutenant in July, 1915, and temporary captain from April, 1919, to February, 1920. He was stationed at Napier from 1913 to 1915, later went to Palmerston North as assistant director of supplies and transport and officer-in-charge of the Army (Service Corps, Wellington military district.
