SPORTS AT ELTHAM.

ATHLETIC AND CYCLING EVENTS. FOURTH ANNUAL MEETING. The annual sports meeting under the auspices of the Elthani Cycling, Racing and Athletic Club was held yesterday in the presence of a large crowd. The day was perfect, but g freshening 'breeze made cycling difficult along the back. The close finishes of many of the largest fields \yere a tribute to the handicappers (M.essrs.' A. Beesley and H. Nuttall cycling, and 11. Ward running), more especially as the meeting was one of the first in Tar.iuaki and the form of competitors has not yet been disclosed. That the meeting was a popular one was shown by a considerable increase in the en tries over last year. The secretary (Mr. 11. f.uttall) and his committee had made complete arrangements, and the grounds and appointments were in first-class order, a feature of the day being the excellent manner ® in which the results were made known to th-; public. During the afternoon the Elthani Citizens’ Band provided enjoyable music. The tofficials were: Judges, Messrs. T. C. Stunners and C. Cooper; starter. Mr. A. Whiting; timekeeper, Mr. H. Ward; marshal, Mr. W. S. Heyes; stewards, .Messrs. Fitzg’-'bbon, Ware. Bhlett, Bicheno, Gower, Bennett, Davis, Andrews, Dunn, Bary and Marchant. During tae afternoon a collection was taken up on the grounds to provide prizes for children's races, which were run at intervals towards th*) end of the programme. By winning the half-mile, the mile, three mile and five mile cycling events, P. Griffin was the most successful competitor, securing £l6 in prize money. In the runping events K. S. Philpotts gave an outstanding display, and by winning the 100, 150 and 220 yards handicaps, won £8 10s. Results:— Running. 150 yards maiden race—R. S. Philpotts 1, L. Hoffmann 2, L. Page 3. The Ngaere team, which finished second, was disqualified for dropping the stick, and Mangatokl was given the place. 220 yards handicap.—R. 8. Philpotts (24yds) 1, C. Foot (24yds) 2, G. Mayhead (60yds) dead heat 2. Hoffmann was third entering tne straight and drew away at the finish to win by eight yards, the dead-heat men running together over the last chain. Time, 2mlu.

Allen (360yds) 3. Griffin caught the field on the tenth lap and rode into third position on the sixteenth, with the seven remaining riders in a bunch. The last lup, the twentieth, was a ding-dong go between ‘he placed men, Griffin winning by three yards, with a similar distance between second and third. Time, 14min. 22sec.
