PLUNKET SHIELD MATCHES. WELLINGTON v. AUCKLAND. BIG SCORING BY WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington’, Dec. 25. The Wellington-Auckland cricket match for the Plunkei Shield was commenced at the Wellington College grounds to-day in dull but fine weather. There was a good attendance. The hc?ue team won the toss and Hiddlestone and Baker opened the innings against Wilson and Alcoit The batsmen got going quickly, Hiddlestone particularly being aggressive, and 50 appeared for 45 minutes’ play. Runs now came freely. At 74 Baker jumped out to Smith, who had relieved Wilson, and was stumped by Rountree. Kortlang. the incomer, soon got double figures and 100 appeared for 70 minutes' play, Hiddlestone 52 and Kortlang 14. At 13C Wilson went on instead of Sneaden, whose relief of Alcott had been costly. The Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Auckland was continued to-day in ideal weather. There was a good attendance and the wicket was in good order. Orr and Hiddleston continued Wellington’s innings, which stood at 263. The latter was caught after adding 13 to his overnight tally of 150. Collins joined Orr and the pair put on 27 before Orr was caught behind the wickets off Smith. McGirr filled the gap and played a jperry innings for 36, which included 5 fours and a six. Bernau then partnered Collins, and the pair put on 60 runs, compiled by goud cricket. Bernau was also caught behind the stumps off McLeod. Holland then went to the crease, and with Collins pat on 100 in forty minutes. Collins was finally caught by Irving off Wilson for 127, while Holland fell to one *of Smith’s slews. The end came soon after and the Innings closed for 569. Smith bowled 35.2 overs and five maidens, taking six wickets for 172 runs.

Sneddon and Frater opened Auckland's in- ! nings against the bowling of Bruce and McGirr. The pair got going quickly and scored 2~. in seven minutes. Snedden's 28 was comprised of seven fours. A fine stand was made ’ by Dacre and Smith, who put on 109 runs. Smith got runs steadily, but Dacre hit lustily ■ for 63, which included three •sixes. The Plunket Shield and diamond jubilee cricket match, Otago v. Canterbury, was commenced at Lancaster Park this afternoon. A thunderstorm delayed the start for half an hour. Otago won the toss, and batten. The bowlers were unable to find length or direction a situation which Shepherd and Worker appreciated. They knocked up 33 in twenty minutes, when further rain sent the players in for a brief respite. At 5 p.m. the scores were as follow: — OTAGO. First Innings. The Canterbury-Otago match was resumed to-day in ideal weather conditions. Otago’s batting was stylish and aggressive, but Canterbury has rarely given a weaker display of batting. Worker’s 172 will rank as one of the best innings played in Plunket Shield matches. Scores:— Otago’s first innings closed for 343 (Shepherd 47, Worker 172, Blamires 35, H. Alloo 21, A. Alloo 18, Knight 15). Read took two wickets for 84, Cunningham four for 83, Talbot one for 34, Sandman three for 61. When stumps were drawn Canterbury had lost five wickets for 119 (Blunt 45, Talbot 19, Patrick not out 20).

HAWKE CUP MATCH. WANGANUI v. SOUTH AUCKLAND. Wanganui, Last Night. The Hawke Cup cricket match between Wanganui and South Auckland was commenced tills morning in brilliant weather. The wicket had had a thorough soaking overnight and was soft at the commencement. The scores were WANGANUI.

The match will be resumed to-morrow. NEW SOUTH WALES TOUR. NO TEST FOR AUCKLAND. DUNEDIN'S PRIOR CLAIM. Dunedin. Last Night. Dunedin was before Auck- | land with the request, but he also denied accepting the decision /without demur. Gamble took five wickets for 38. Victoria won by an innings and 241 runs. HAWERA v. WAVERLEY. A WIN FOR HAWERA. A team representative of the Waverley district visited Hawera yesterday and played n Hawera team on King Edward Park. Hawera securing “a three-point win.” In their first innings Waverley made 81, Pepper contributing 36 and Coster 14. Oakes took six wickets for 13 runs, Lay two for 9 and Fulton two for 51. Hawera replied with 169 runs, of which Fulton made 48. Dalgleish 30. Houghton and Johnson 25 each and Parfit* 15. Harper took nine wickets for 56 runs and McMurray one for 34. In their second strike Wayerley did better, compiling 159 runs. Bradmore made 54, Pepper and Wybourne 32 each and McMurray 16 Oakes took seven wickets for 37 runs, Fulton one for 22 and Houghton one for 25. To win Hawera had 55 minutes to make 71 runs. A very enjoyable game was witnessed on Christmas Day at the New Plymouth Sportsground by a good gathering of spectators, when cricketers over 30 years of age played j; team of players under 30. The match was drawn, being unfinished on account of the rain. Lambert, gave an exhibition of rapid scoring, compiling 70 before going out to a catch by Monteath off Palmer’s bowling. E.
