CUP COMPETITIONS. FIRST ROUND CONCLUDED. WESTERN PARK DEFEATS NEW PLYMOUTH The only senior match played in the North Taranaki competitions Qn Saturday was the completion at Pukekura Park of the unfinished match between New Plymouth and Western 1 ark. This match was commenced at Western Park on November 10, and when stumps were drawn for the day New Pl.’.lhouth appeared to be in a good position, as they had scored 125 in the first Innings, whilst Western Park had scored 98 in the first innings and had lost two good wickets for 69 runs. However, on Saturday’s play Western Park easily maintained the upper hand and won by 93 runs. 1 R. Macdonald and Grayson, the not out men, who had one and four to their credit, quickly got going and raised the score to 125 before | a separation was effected, the innings finally I closing for 197. Grayson's contribution was which included six boundaries, while Macdonald’s total was 29, including three boundaries. Mahar (11) was the only other batsman to make double figures, though each ccntributed a few. Clarke,' six for 58, bowled well, while Lambert also took four for 60. Requiring 171 runs to win, New Plymouth opened with Ferry and Nasmith, but the start, was not too promising, as Ferry was caught eff Quickfall with the score at 2. Nasmith and Lambert were then associated, and the score reached 26, when Lambert was caught eff Quickfall for 19. Lambert had opened carefully, but was just opening out when he was dismissed. His score included two boundaries. Nasmith batted well for 24, but Morrison (13) and Shepherd (9) were the only ones that could do anything with the bowling, and the innings closed for 77, leaving Western Park victorious by 94 runs. Quickfall and Macdonald bowled unchanged, the former taking six for 38 and the latter four for 38. Detailed scores:— WESTERN PARK.

The match between the junior reps, ahd the combined High School and Old Boys teams played on the High School ground, resulted in an easy win for the combined team. The juniors batted first, but could do nothing against the bowling of Pat Palmer (five for 10) and Mahraj (three for 4), being all dismissed for 23. GAMES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Hawera, Dec. 22. No competition cricket matches were played in South Taranaki to-day, the big attraction being the town versus country A and B matches at Hawera. The result was a win for the country in each grade, the country A team having an easy victory over the town team. The weather was fine and the wicket fair, but the standard of cricket on the whole was not high. The top score of the day was made by E. C. Cole, who reached 70 with a certain amount of luck. The town teams were drawn from Patea and Hawera and the country teams from elsewhere in the South Taranaki Association’s district. The country A team beat town A by 227 runs to 73 for eight wickets in a one Innings match, the detailed scores being:— COUNTRY A.

TOWN v. COUNTRY. WELLINGTON TEAM CHOSEN. Wellington, Dec. 22. The iown v. country game was concluded today in fine weather, and ended in a draw. Hiddleston and Kortlang continued the town innings and put on 156. Kortlang made 73 and Hiddleston 125. With the exception of McGirr, who made 57, the other batsmen were very mediocre. The innings closed for 340. Hope bowled well, getting four wickets for 115. Country, requiring 237 - to win, went to the wickets with two hours to go, and the batting was on the slow side. At the call of time they had six wickets down for 149. Orr ployed a. fine innings for 44, Lash made 23, and Bernau 26 not out. Tho first match between Victoria and Queensland since 1913 commenced in fine weather on a good wicket. Queensland, in the first innings, made 162 (L. Oxenhani 43). Victoria made 10R without the loss of a wicket (Ponsford net out 59, Mayne not out 47). Received Dec. 23. 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Dec. 23. Tn the match against Queensland, Victoria has lest two wickets for 538 (Ponsford 248, Mayne 209, Woodful not out, 46). The PonsfordMayne partnership yielded 45C, a first wicket record fur Australia. Their play generally was more effective than inspiring, though Ponsford, in the latter stages, livened up. Mayne adopted safe tactics, and at one period failed to score for over twenty minutes. Ponsford batted from 4 o'clock on Friday afternoon to four o’clock on Saturday afternoon. He gave chances at 132 and 170. Mayne was in for 378 minutes, and did not give a single chance.
