INGLEWOOD COUNTY.

SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROADISO PROPOSALS. , A special meeting of the Inglewood County Ceuncil was held yesterday. Present: Crs. A. Corklll (chairman), .1. W. Harding, J. Grieve, A K. Laurence and Winter. The chairman reported that he had waited on the Patea County Council in connection with the bitumen work, and had been very cordially received, tin? chairman and members promising to give the council every assistance possible. The Patea County Council notified that as the result .of the chairman’s interview, the engineer had 0)000 granted permission io place at the Inglewood County Council’s disposal their tar foreman, and had also asked the engineer to do all in his power to assist the council with its bitumen -work. The chairman said that though they had received nothing official, he understood that the Highways Board waft going to insist on a standard width of 18 feet. They were also going to be particular that bad bends were removed, and as far as possible roads would require to be level. It would therefore be seen that it was absolutely essential that specifications should be submitted. As Mr. Dowsett had intimated that he was relinquishing the work owing to pressure of other work, he had arranged with Mr. King, the Patea county engineer, to prepare the necessary specifications. On the motion of Crs. Stewart and Hunter the chairman’s action was approved. METAL SUPPLIES. Mr. T. C. H. Nicholls wrote offering the council the sole right to the metal pit on his property, subject to being paid 3d per yard ) on the first 4000 yards and 6d per yard thereI after. Mr. Nicholls waited on the council in connection with the offer. Members of the council pointed out that the initial expense of stripping would be very heavy. The chairman said that the council had two or three places in view. Il was decided to instruct the overseer to inspect this pit, and also the Hursthouse Road pit, and submit a report .to the next meeting of the council on January 8. CONSULTING ENGINEER’S REPORT. The consulting engineer (Mr. C. F. Dowsett) reported that as he had received no word from the Mana Road contractor he presumed that no further metal had been carted to .the depot. . mtspiko 8»«a to aew

About 500 cubic yards of boulders were at the depot. On the Hursthouse Road the earthwork was now being proceeded with. The Norfolk Road East was not yet let. He suggested that Mr. Harland should assume control of the Mana, Kaipl, HUrsthouae and Norfolk East Roads, all of which works had been pegged out, and comprehensive sped flcations prepared and signed. The report was adopted, and ft was resolved that the overseer be placed in charge of the works. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer (Mr. T. Harland) reported that a large lorry broke through the Ngatoro bridge on the Junction Hoad, completely breaking eleven joists and 30 feet by 11 feet of decking. Timber from tlie Manganui bridge was u»ed for repairs, tho bridge only being closed one day. The Junction Road, between Maketown and Tariki. had been blinded. Messrs. Grigg and Old’s contract at Maketawa had been completed. The tarred section on the Mountain Road had been blinded, but still required further attention. Tho Bradford Roan bridge should be completed In a few days. Work on the Oapul bridge (Junction Road) should be completed by Saturday night. On the Otaoroa Road metalling contract, Mr. I’liiHps had crushed 350 yards of metal and placed this on the road. Mr. Andrews had commenced crushing; approximately 150 yards metal had been crushed to date, 60 yards being dumped at the Egmont Road gate for the National Park Board. On the Kaipl Road, the large crusher and engine was ready to commence work. Approximately 350 yards of boulders had been delivered, and he felt certain the contractor would not be able to keep the crusher employed. The tanks for the bitumen were being placed in position at the Durham Road depot.—-Adopted. GENERAL. The Inglewood Borough Council applied for permission to make and use a site for a stone crusher at Waitul.—Left in the hands of the overseer with power to grant the request, and subject to any road damage being made good. The statement of accounts showed that there was available for expenditure on the main roads £€24 <ss Bd, In the East Riding £126 5s 4d, and in the West Riding £367 18s Bd. The North Riding was £59 18s 5d overspent, and the South Riding was £3O 17s 8d over- . spent. The Inglewood Borough Council notified that ' It was not in a position to submit a quotation to the County Council for the supply of any stone chips, owing to the indefiniteness of present arrangements regarding the supply of stone, obtaining a chip crusher and the power for working same. W. Thomason notified that he was prepared to undertake the contract for the supply of 1300 yards stong. under the conditions stated tn his tender, aft the council’s conditions were not acceptable. The Treasury Department forwarded a voucher for £783 15s, being subsidy on account of general rates. One tender was received for the Norfolk Road East metal, but it was considered too high, and the matter was referred to the cl'nli’man and Cr. Harding to arrange with the contractor. The Public Works Department notified payment to the council's account of £3OO on account of the R'ataplko grant (£ for £). Prior to the conclusion of the meeting, the chairman extended the compliments of the season to the council and staff, the wishes being reciprocated.
