HAWERA NEWS.
THE CHRISTMAS SEASON, BUSINESS REPORTED GOOD. (From Our Own Reporter). Hawera, Dec. 21. of the usual Christmas atmosphere was introduced into Hawera this afternoon by the decoration of the shop fronts with greenery. The committee appointed for the purpose arranged for the delivery of greenery at every door in the main streets, and the tradespeople were soon busy in front of their premises. The result was very effective, and lent a decided air of festivity in contrast to the every-day drabness of the streets. The tradespeople report a fair, steady trade in most Christmas lines of goods, and expect brisk business to-morrow ami Monday. The indications point to the 1923 Christmas season being quiet, but accompanied with a greater feeling of steady prosperity and content than has been present for several years. There is neither the hectic rush that characterised the late years of the war and those immediately following, nor the depression of the slump period, but in place of this there is a general indication of a slow but sure return to peacetime prosperity. The people are attending to their work rather than to festivities, and this* is probably one of th? surest signs that the future will be brighter than the immediate past.
