PALMERSTON GASWORKS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. The new borough gasworks were officially opened by the Mayor (Mr. Nathan), who stated that the works up to the present had cost £165,000. In 1800 the consumption was 2.000,000 cubic feet; to-day it was 108,000.00*; cubic feet; consumers in 1890 were 129, to-day they were 3873; there were three miles of gas mains in 1890, to-day there were 57; the income in that year was £2500. to-day it was over £50,000. The new works were most up-to-date, and marked an epoch in the history of the town. IMPROVING TIMAR'U HARBOUR. Timaru, Last Night. The Timaru Harbour Board yesterday discussed schemes for harbour improvement submitted by Mr. Dudley Dobson ard Mr. F.W. Clarke, the board's engineer. The schemes are estimated to cost £390,000 and <£202,000 respectively One comprises a mole four thousand feet long and another a thousand feet, with a spur mole nine hundred. The provides a mole three thousand feet long, with a mole and spur as in the former scheme. The board decided on the casting vote of the chairman to submit the scheme to a Royal Commission to report or make suggestions on the alternative means of improvement. ILLICIT SALE OF BEER. Auckland, Dec. 21. In the Police Court, Margaret Douglas, confectioner, Victoria Street, was fined £3O for having cold beer without a license. She purchased liquor retail at 9d and sold it at Is per bottle tA help out her takings.
