Lecturing before the Institution of Mining Engineers on the effects of high temperature on miners, Profesaor Moi* advocated the use of salt to prevent fatigue. It had been proved that the use of salt added 20 per cent, to the efficiency of miners working in. a heated atmosphere. The future of British mining depended upon the ability to mine at great depths. Such mining was impossible unless the effects of high temperatures were overcome. Miners working in hot dry places drank large quantities of water, which caused cramp ahd fatigue and clogged the kidneys. To prevent this a .solution of salt water, sufficient to balance the loss of salt by perspirns tion, should be drunk. The lecturer quoted a number of cases of miners being completely cured«
