ELTHAM.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) July 10. The Chamber of Commerce met last evening, Mr. I. J. Bridger presiding over a fair attendance. The proposed amalgamation of the Progress Committee and other committees with the chamber was discuseel. It was proposed that the general council be eleven, instead of nine ae previously, the Progress Committee to watch the interests of the town nightwatchman, etc., and the Retailers’ Committee to look after the interests of the townspeople and business men generally. Mr. Bridger moved: “That this Chamber of Commerce amalgamate, and that the constitution of the chamber be altered embodying the articles contained in the agreement.”—Carried unanimously.
a revised set of rules will be submitted to the annual meeting. Tne chairman stated that at present Eltham was in the darr; as to the exact telephone charges which would be made under the new scheme, but it was evident that the charges would be considerably more than at present. He was of the opinion that if the new rentals were enforced a great number of subscribers would discontinue the use of tne elephone, and the department would reasonably expect, to lose at least 100 subscribers to the Eltham exchange. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “That this chamber protests strongly against any increase in the telephone charges, and is of the opinion that the charges ought to be reduced instead of increased.” ft was resolved to hold the annual meeting and dinner on Monday, August The following resolution was carried unanimously: “That this chamber protests against the apparent unwarranted delay in the transportation of goods from the New Plymouth breakwater southwards, and also against the exorbitant freights now being charged over the lines generally.”
