STEAM FROM THE SEA.

DENSE COLUMN 100 FEET HIGH. STRANGE PHENOMENON. By Telegra- -Press Assn. Received July 10, 8.55 p.m. Suva, July 10. Captain Davey, of the Tofua, reports that at ten o’clock on July 1 he sighted a dense column of steam rising ninety to a hundred feet out of the ocean, nineteen miles north-west of Nukualofa. Previously the vicinity was always a pale green patch, and now the sea is bubbling two feet high, and the steam is visible for twenty miles. An earthquake occurred at Nukualofa the previous day. It is estimated the area the Steam is rising from is half a mile in extent. The passengers on the Tofua were greatly interested, the shin being within easy distance for observing the phenomenon.
