HAWERA NEWS.

TECHNICAL SCHOOLS’ FUNDS. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, July 9. The question of the allocation of the funds standing to the credit of the various technical schools in Tai&naki on the recent transfer of control, again came before a special meeting of the | Board of Governors of the Hawera Technical School on Saturday night, dissatisfaction having previously been expressed at the proportion allocated to Hawera. A letter was received from the Taranaki Education Board stating that it was prepared to give all information as to the account to the Hawera board and to meet it and discuss the position. A resolution was passed appointing the chairman and the director i to investigate the technical schools’ fund account for the purpose of obtaining the i necessary facts with which to meet the board. GENERAL ITEMS. The medical superintendent reported to the Hawera Hospital Board to-day for the month of June that 57 were admitted, 43 were discharged, and 4 died. Fifty-two remained in the institution at the end of the month. The daily average of occupied beds was 51.6. Twentythree operations were performed.

The death occurred at the Patea Hospital on Sunday of Miss Jean Forbes, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Forbes, of Kakaramea, at the age of 21 years. The Eltham Salvation Army Boys’ Orphanage Band and a company of choristers and soloists spent the weekend in Hawera and attracted a great deal of attention by their performances. Under Commandant and Mrs. Home, the boys played a number of selections on the streets on Saturday afternoon and evening, drawing large audiences. On Sunday afternoon they gave an open-air concert in the park under the baton of Mr. Bridger, and in the evening submitted an excellent programme In the Opera House. The collections on each occasion were liberal, and should be a welcome addition to the funds of the home. The boys were billeted out by friends in Hawera, and their conduct throughout the visit was a distinct credit to their institution.
