HAWERA COUNTY.

THE MONTH’S WORK MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Hawera County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Councillors J. B. Murdoch (chairman), R. J. Linn, E. A. Washer, B. C. Lysaght, J. Douglas, C. J. Hawken, G. A. W. Williams and A. Larcom. The foreman reported for the month as follows :—Whareroa Road: The metalling of this road has had to be stopped on account of the road being weak on this side of the tip head. Everything is ready to make a fresh start as soon as the weather clears up. Ohangal Road: The metal has been laid on the bad portion of this road on the west of the Tawhlti Road, but the rolling will have to be left, until the road is drier. Turuturu Road: A start has been made with refacing the metal from the county depot to the Glover Road on the hill where it is being widened as it is difficult to pass traffic, as the sides are generally being in a sloppy condition. Hastings Road: The scarifying on this road has had to be stopped for the present. It will be attended to as soon as the weather is suitable. Rainie Road: This road is In need of about 300 yards of metal and it is proposed, if the present ’conditions continue, to cart broken metal from the Waukino and reface the portions necessary. This will be as cheap as getting pit metal when the stripping and the knapping of the stones Is taken into consideration. The back country is standing up well as regards slips. There have been very few and these have been small. The teams have been doing very little and two of them are in the paddock at present. There have been no other works in progress during the past month and the surfacemen have been doing just the ordinary surface work. THE TANGAHOE BRIDGE. In reply to the correspondence and a deputation from the council with reference to the pioposed deviation of the South Road and the. re-erection of the Tangahoe Bridge, the Minister for Public Works replied that It was considered that the council’s estimate of £3,000 for a bridge on the present site was too low and that it would cost £4,000. It was also considered that xthe site laid off by the resident engineer six or seven chains lower down the stream was much superior to the present one. The new site would cut out 4% chains In distance and would obviate two bad corners, substituting therefor easy curves with three chains radius. The cost of rebuilding the bridge at the new site was estimated at £6,000. The Government was prepared to grant a subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £3,000 on condition that the bridge was built on the new site. The chairman said he had met the resident engineer in Stratford, who said the department would not give a penny towards the bridge on the old site. The department was against spending public money on a site which could be considerably improved. GENERAL. The Kaupokonul Dairy Company wrote Asking that in view of the heavy toll fees paid by them, that these fees be the only payment necessary by the company.—The clerk replied that no diffe- itiation could be made with this company without the consent of the other local bodies in the Taranaki joint by-laws. Six residents of Clive Street petitioned, the council to erect two lights in the street, their accesS being muddy and without lights.—The question was deferred in view of the probability of the street shortly being merged into the borough. A. J. Haseltine, South Road, drew the attention of the council to the fact that some willows had been left lying in the Waihl Stream at the ford and were taking root, blocking the stream and packing the water on to his property. The practice of motorists In throwing petrol tins into the ford Was also complained of. The chairman said the Electric Light Company. had cleared the stream. The Hawera Amateur Athletic Club asked the permission of the council to hold a cycle road race from Waihl through Okaiawa to Normanby and back to the starting point.—The chairman said It was a bad practice to establish such things on the public roads, and permission was refused. The chairman was appointed the council’s delegate to the Counties’ Association Conference on August 8. The Public Trustee wrote stating that the council’s application for a loan of £16,000 at 5% per cent, for the extinguishment of the antecedent liability was receiving consideration.
