REATY WITH TURKS.

JIEEMENT REPORTED. ADVICE IN PARIS. confirmation lacking. AWAITING NEXT MOVE. Bl Telesrapn.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 6, 5.5 p.m. London, Feb. 5. The Centra! News Agency learns from Paris that M. Bompard telegraphed to M. Poincare stating that lie and Ismet Pasha had fresh conversations on Monday, the Turkish delegation informing him that they had agreed to sign the treaty presented on Sunday. M. Poincare notified Britain accordingly. When the British Cabinet adjourned to-night it had received no intimation from Pans about Turkey’s willingness to sign the treaty. A member of the British delegation is staying on at Lausanne in cn®e the Turks give way or want further technical information. Ponding Turkey’s signature being appended to tjie treaty, the term<s of the M jaania conference will remain in operation. Ismet. however, states that the Mudania term** cannot continue for ever, as they are terribly expensive for Turkey. NO GRAVE FEARS HOPES OF SETTLEMENT. FRANCO-BRITISH UNITY. Received Feb. 7, 12.5 a.m. London, Feb. 5. Official circles do not regard the Lausanne breakdown as entailing hostilities or the recommencement of negotiations for a new treaty. In view of the great measure of agreement, hope is still entertained that an arrangement will be achieved over the capitulations and economic clauses. It is expected Ismet will see the wisdom, in view of the many concessions which the Allies offered in other clauses, of making a treaty before returning to Angora. It is pointed out there is complete Franco-British agreement over the clauses which proved the stumbling block. For the present the Allies adhere to the r eleventh-hqur offer and wjll await Ismet’s next step. * The Echo de Paris believes the Turkish obstinacy sprang from a belief that they could disunite the Allies. They practically conceded the English demands and refuged all concessions to France, but Lord Cunon’s declaration against a separate peace upset the Turkish calculations. AMERICA CONCERNED. HESITATING OVER SEPARATE . TREATY. SURVEY OP WORLD SITUATION. ■Received Feb. 6, 9 p.m. New York, Feb. 5. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says the break-up of the Lausanne conference is a matter of concern to the United States, which is hesitating to begin negotiations for a separate treaty with the Turke. It is pointed out that a separate treaty would weaken England’s position in reference to Turkey, while France would be strengthened. It is probable that at to-morrow’s meeting the Senate Committee on Foreight Relations will ask the Secretary for State (Mr. Hughes) to appear in order to obtain a survey of the world situation from a United States viewpoint. Meanwhile Senator Borah is holding |ii» economic conference resolution in abeyance pending developments. IF A RUPTURE OCCURS. TURKS PRESERVING AIMS. Received Feb. 7, 12.5 a.m. Constantinople, Feb. 5. Kemal Pasha, In a declaration published in the Smyrna newspapers, said that in case of a rupture the Angora Government would take all necessary measures to assure the attainment of its national aims. Kemal has gone to Balikesser to inspect the Chanak troops.
