A CRITICAL STAGE. AGREEMENT NOT REACHED. RESISTANCE OF TURKS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 28, 5.5 p.m. Lausanne, Nov. 27. The Near East conference is at a critical stage. A mooting of the first commission was called for this morning, but was postponed, it is believed ! because of the fact that conservations between Lord Curzon and Ismet Pasha, have failed to reach an agreement over Mosul. Ismet Pasha had a long interview with Mr. Childs (the United States observer) to-day. Undoubtedly the latter’s address, together with M. Rajcowsky’s declaration, has had the effect of strengthening the Turkish resistance. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CLAIMS OF AMERICA. HER POLICY MADE CLEAR. Received Nov. 29, 9.45 p.m. New York, Nov. 27. The New York Times’ Washington correspondent states White House, desiring to point out the reason fqr Mr. Childs’ speech at Lausanne, which is reported to have antagonised the French, has indicated that his address was merely an elucidation of Mr. C. E. Hughes’ note, and was designed to again emphasise the American position in the Near East before any decisions mignt be made that would conflict with the United States’ attitude. The United States was not seeking benefit in the Near East without assuming responsibilities. America does not intend to become entangled in purely territorial and political settlements there, but would make a firm diplomatic fight to defend its rights, which were guaranteed under treaties and capitu- ' lations before the outbreak of •war. The United States feels it is inconceivable that the Allies will not consider American rights in view of the United States’ contributions to victory. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. RUSSIANS NOT SATISFIED. Received Nov. 28, 7.40 p.m. Lausanne, Nov. 27. It is reported the Russian delegates have intimated their intention to leave the conference unless admitted to all sittings.
