GIRLS’ FRIENDLY SOCIETY.

ANNUAL REPORT. Following is the annual report of the New Plymouth Girls’ Friendly Society: Since our last annual meeting Miss Sale has been appointed matron and secretary. It was with great regret the committee accepted Miss Percy Smith’s resignation as secretary. Owing to the illness of her father she was unable to continue her work. A letter of condolence in connection with the death of Mr. Percy Smith was sent from the committee. We all hope that after a rest and change, Miss Percy Smith will again take an active part in the worK of the society. I am sorry to report that the members’ attendance on Tuesday evenings has fallen away considerably; there has also been a decided absence of associates. I hope that next year will see a stronger support from both members and associates, so that the real work of the society may be better done. Our roll of membership is smaller than it has ever been, and I think a vigorous movement should be started to attract more members. The attendance at the lunch hour keeps up, there being an average of 15 girls each day, the highest being 20. The committee wish to thank all friends and associates for helping them in this work. Also we wish to thank Mr. Cottier for auditing the accounts and regret that he is unable to continue doing this work for the society. We are also grateful to Mr. Wallace for keeping the ground at the back of the hostel tidy and for vegetables planted. The “at home” in aid of G.F.S. funds was held in St. Mary’s Hall on August 2o and realised £l5 7s, and of this £ was divided amongst our different charities, £1 was given towards St. Mary s vestry fund, the balance ( £lO 7s) going towards the matron’s fund. The rents of the rooms have been raised owing to extra outlay. The club room has been re-papered and Panted which is a great improvement also the verandah room has been painted. We are now hoping to have No. 1 room and passage papered. , . „ Our anniversary day was kept by a service of Holy Communion at 7 a.m. on July 21 A branch of the sdeiety has been opened, at Inglewood and Okato. We wish our sister clubs every success in their good work. . Mrs Home was re-elected presiding associate, Miss Wilson deputy presiding associate, Miss McKellar treasurer and Miss Sale secretary. The house committee was appointed as follows: Miss Curtis (convener). Mrs. Eberlet, Misses Hamerton, Giblin and A. Wilson.
