THE CENTRAL SCHOOL.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee took place last night. Present: Mr. T. M. Avery (in the chair), Mrs. S. Jamison, Messrs. V. Eliott, W. S. Cobham, F. W. Croker, F. Coleman and H. A. Stratford (headmaster). An apology was received from Mr. S. G. Smith. The headmaster reported that the average daily attendance for the past four weeks had been 641.5, or 93.9 per cent, of the average roll.. The present roll was 685. The results of the recent teachers’ examinations were now to hand, and showed that Miss N. Peach had completed her “D” certificate. Miss Jones, Miss Mitchell, Mr. Coleman and Mr. Thomson had each only one subject remaining for completion. These results were highly creditable to the candidates. Owing to a commencement having been made with the removal of two rooms, it. had been suggested that the school should break up on December 13 instead of on the 20th. He understood that the architect had found that it would be essential for him to be given as much time as possible, otherwise the rooms would not be ready for the reopening. The examination of the school would be completed by that time. It had been considered advisable to hold the “break-up” ceremony in the Workers’ Hall, and if the committee were agreeable, he would like to engage the hall at once. The ceremony in connection with the infant school could take place at 11 a.m. as usual. As there were many well-wishers who would willingly contribute towards the prize fund, he 'suggested that donations be invited. After the two rooms at. the main school had been altered there would be u considerable amount of repairs to be effected, especially to the asphalt, and he thought it would be well to have an understanding with the board in the matter. It was resolved that the breaking-up ceremony be held in accordance with the headmaster’s recommendation, and all arrangements were left in his hands. It was also decided that a committee meeting be held on the Courtenay Street School grounds at 4.30 p.m. on December 13. It was decided that, a motto, “Learn, by Doing,” be placed in a prominent position on the New Central Infant School. The Mayor and the Mayoress are to be invited to attend the breaking-up ceremony.
