CHRISTMAS NUMBER.

SERIES OF COMPETITIONS. ENTRIES CLOSE ON TUESDAY. The Christmas Number of the Taranaki Daily News will be issued as usual this year, and competitors in the wide range of competitions are reminded that entries close on Tuesday next. All entries should be j addressed to “The Editor, Christmas Number, Taranaki Daily News, New Plymouth.” Competitors desiring to preserve their work should make duplicate copies, as owing to the increasing number of entries the Editor cannot undertake to return unaccepted essays. An exception will be made in the case of competition numbers 1,2, 3 and 5, providing an addressed and stamped envelope is enclosed. Details of the competitions are: 1. ORIGINAL STORY, of about 2000 words. First prize, £3 3s; second, £2 2s. The Editor reserves the right to use, for one issue only, any story submitted, the author to receive £1 Is. Our copyright for stories used will only exist for this issue, but no story which has been published elsewhere will be considered. 2. OLD TARANAKI. Contributions are invited of interesting incidents or events in the early history of Taranaki, not to exceed 1000 words. First prize, £1 Is; second, 10/6. ■ 3. IN THE COUNTRY OR BACKBLOCKS.—Contributions are invited regarding life in the country or backblocks, covering experiences which must be novel and exciting; not to exceed 1000 words. First prize, £1 Is; second, 10/6. 4. BEST SPORTING YARN, up to 500 words (half a column). First prize, £1 Is; second, 10/6. 5. ORIGINAL POEM.—Subject: “The Coming of the First Settlers to New Plymouth.” First prize, £1 Is; second, 10/6. 6. ESSAYS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN: (a) Open to boys and girls up to 14 years of age. Subject: “The Most Interesting Day in My Life.” First prize, £2 2s; second prize, £1 Is. (b) Open to boys and girls up to 17 years of age. Subject: “My Happiest Christmas Holiday.” First prize, £2 2s; second prize, £1 Is.
