NEW SOUTH WALES MATCH. BRIGHT BATTING BY VISITORS. A CENTURY TO CHAPMAN. , By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 24, 10.20 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 24. A. C. MacLaren’s English team opened their match against New South Wales to-day. The weather is fine, though cloudy, and a cool southerly is blowing. The attendance was small. MacLaren won the toss and Wilkinson and Titchmarsh opened to the bowling of Hendry and Kelleway, but owing to the excellent length of the latter there was no scoring, except from loose ones on the slow side. The spectators welcomed Mailey’s appearance, as it was imagined the googly expert would nonplus the visitors in a similar fashion to the way he treated Douglas’ team, but the arrival of Chapman quickly dispelled the notion. A left hander, resembling Woolley in many respects, Chapman attacked the googlies in convincing fashion. Being tall he utilised his reach to good effect, turning many good length balls into full tosses and despatching them to the boundary between mid-on and square leg. After lunch he treated the spectators to one of the finest all round displays witnessed for years, adding fortyfour of the fifty-five in twenty minutes, Mailey being the victim. He reached the century in 77 minutes and was then caught at long off boundary by Bards - ley, off Asher. His score included fifteen fours. Titchmarsh meanwhile had reached forty-eight by patient batting, but he was clean howled by Kelleway when his score had reached seventy-nine. The advent of the silvery haired MacLaren was the signal for unstinted applause, which was renewed as the veteran revealed glimpses of his old-time form. At the tea adjournment the board showed five for 271 runs. MacLaren. McLean and Freeman offered a stubborn resistance to the attack on resuming. The English captain surprised the spectators by his agility and brilliancy. Hendry and Kelleway maintained, a persistent length throughout the day, but Mailey at no stage seemed dangerous. Gregory’s fast bowling was sorely missed by the New South Wales team. The Australian eleven representative is at present on his farm in Queensland. The innings closed for 360. Bardslcy and Collins opened New South Wales - innings with a quarter of an hour left and played out time. Scores:— (ENGLAND.
