THE TELEPHONE SERVICE.
TROUBLE ON THE NEW PLYMOUTH* HAWERA LINE. Complaints have recently been made regarding the working of the telephone lino between New Plymouth and Hawera, and the matter was taken up with the Post and Telegraph authorities by the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, which has received the following reply from the Chief Postmaster (Mr. Bree): — Referring to your communication in regard to complaints received by your chamber concerning the poor working of the New Plymouth-Hawera telephone line, especially after 8 a.m., I beg to advise you that this trouble is due to certain alterations which are at present in progress od the line mentioned. Heretofore there has been one direct metallic circuit from New Plymouth to Hawera. The line party is now at work installing a second metallic circuit. As this work progresses, it is necessary not only to erect the two additional wires, but also to disturb the existing wires so that the four may, so to speak, revolve. This is done to overcome induction on “crosstalk” on long telephone circuits. I may mention that the lines from New Plymouth to Tariki are complete, but there still remains further work to be done, and the interruptions complained of are likely to-continue for some little time. However, when the job is complete, there will be three good lines to Hawera, two direct, and one through Opunake, and thia should result in the requirements of the two places being very fully met for some years.
