POSTAL CHARGES.

A REDUCTION LIKELY. ACCOUNTS LOOKING BETTER. Tn presenting the annual report of the Post and Telegraph Department on Tuesday night the Postmaster-(Tan-era 1 (Hon. J. G. Coates) stated that during the past year the revenue of the department had exceeded the expenditure by £359,W3, and that in consequence there was likely to be a reduction in the charges for certain services, though he was unable to state which. In the year before last the Post Office had shown a loss. Expenditure had exceeded receipts by some £l3OO. Now that there was a profit of £359,000 the Government could consider the possibility of reducing the cost of services to the public. The question had been before Cabinet, but he was not yet able to state which services would be reduced in cost. A member: Then there is going to be a reduction? Mr. Coates repeated that there would be a readjustment of the cost of certain services. He had been asked when New Zealand would get back to penny postage. He was unable to say, but if the department was able again thia year to show a reasonable excess of revenue over expenditure he had no doubt that, the price of postage would be reduced. Mr. Witty: They have reduced it in the Old Country. Mr. Coates: They have not actuallyreduced it yet. They intend to reduce it.
