Mr. James Milne, general manager of the Wellington Meat Export Co., is on a brief visit to New Plymouth. Mr. Henry James Dixon, Clerk of the Court, at Hamilton, lias been appointed to the magistracy. Mr. W. J. Girling (Blenheim) will be the official candidate for the Wairau seat at the general election.

Advice was received that the condition of the Rev. Father Sanderson, of Pahiatua, was still very serious. Three doctors, in consultation, expressed tlwir opinion that there wee a slight hope for hie recovery. Mr. P. Halley, Conciliation Commissioner, who has been in New Plymouth during the last few days in connection with two trades union disputes, will leave for Wellington by the mail train this morning. Mr. Joseph Linklater, of Kairanga. who has announced hie. intention of eon testing the Manawatu seat as the official Reform candidate, is well-known throughout the district as a successful farmer and chairman of the Kairanga County -Council and Foxton Harbor Board.

Mr. F. W. G. McLeod, of New Plymouth, received cable advice on Tuesday of his appointment, by the Queensland band authorities, as adjudicator for the championship band contests during Christmas week. The scene of the competition on this occasion will be Townsville.

Mr. T. W. Tibbs, who has been headmaster of the Auckland Grammar Sslkool since 1893, and for eight years prior to that mathematical master, is resigning from the end of January next. He tendered his resignation some time ago, but at the request of the Board of Governors agreed to continue for the remainder of the year.—Press Assn. At the Catholic Church, Opunake, the other day, the marriage took place of Mr. Walter William Vickery and Miss Rosa DeCastro, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John DsCastro, of Ihaia Road, Opunake. The Rev. Father Doolaughty performed the ceremony. The bride was attended as bridesmaid by her sister, Miss Teresa DeCastro. Mr. Leo Macßeynolds acted .as best man. After the ceremony a wedding breakfast was partaken of at the residence of the bride’s parents, where the usual toasts were honored.

The late Walter Wrexham Hughes, who died in Wellington on the 21st inst., was born in New Plymouth. He was educated at Mr. Beardsworth’s school and at Nelson College. After a period spent under articles with Mr. R. M. Honey field, of this town, he went to Wellington and managed a department in the warehouse l of Shannon and Thomson. Upon the dissolution of that firm he was manager for an Australian firm. Thence he went to Melbourne and was there in business as a land agent during the boom of 1888 and 1889. He then spent some time in Sydney and returned to New Zealand about 1899. His last years have been spent in 'Wellington. He was twice married. Of the first marriage there was no issue. His second wife was Miss Rosa Harriet Taylor, daughter of the late Henry Taylor, architect, of New Plymouth. By thia marriage there are two sons, one on a farm and the other studying law in a Wellington office. Mr. Hughes, after two days’ illness, succumbed to a paralytic stroke superinduced, it is thought, by an accident which occurred some years ago at Oakura, while district agent for the Mutual Life and Citizens. He was thrown from his horse and suffered concussion of the brain. For a fortnight afterwards he was unconscious. Mr. Hughes was an active worker in the Wesleyan Church in Wellington.
