DEVELOPMENT OF SHIPPING. INCREASED PORT RETURNS. During the last monthly period the number of vessels trading at the port of New Plymouth was 22, and their gross tonnage was 42,228 tons. The imports amounted to 6867 tons and the exports to 3140 tons, making a total of 10,007 tons. For the corresponding month of the previous year 19 vessels entered the port, their tonnage being 35,583 tons. The imports represented 12,003 tons and the exports 2324 tons, a .total of 14,327 tons. The returns for the quarterly period show that the number of vessels which entered the port was 64, their tonnage being 103,909 tons. The imports amounted to 23,877 tons, and the exports to 8100 tons, making a total of 31,977 tons of cargo handled. For the corresponding quarter last year, the number of vessels was 57, tonnage 102,335 tons, imports 30,900 tons, exports 7195 tons, total cargo, 38,095 tons. For the half-yearly period the number of vessels trading at the port was 123, against 107 for the corresponding period of the previous year, and their tonnage was 224,719 tons, compared with 179,080 tons. The imports totalled 47,230 tons, compared with 56,292 tons, and the exports The total cargo handled was 66,059 tons, 18,809 tons, compared with 17,328 tons, compared with 73,620 tons.
