KAPONGA.
: TOWN BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the Town Board was held i{ on Tuesday, the 18th instant. Present: Commissioners Cook (in the chair), Law. Shepherd, Betts, J. Guy, and the engineer (Mr. Moss). The foreman’s report on the routine work done during the month was received. The chief point of interest in the engineer’s report was that the new power plant had been thoroughly tested by Mr. Webb (representing the makers of the machinery), and found in perfect running order. The lines were now operating up the Upper Manaia Road to Mr. Roe’s house beyond the cross-roads. A number of new suppliers had been added to the line. The opening day for the new power-house was fixed for Wednesday, May 3 (postponed from April 12). Numerous invitations had been issued, and the opening ceremony is to be performed by Mr. O. Hawken, M.P. An appeal for support in the “Poppy Appeal” was received from the Returned Soldiers’ Association. It was decided to ask the headmaster of the Kaponga School to co-operate with the Town Board in the matter. An appeal for assistance was also received on behalf of the St. Dunstan Institute for the blind. It was decided to provide collection boxes to be circulated at the coming sports meeting, and to call tenders for painting the pavilion on the park. THE NEW POWER BOARD. A trial run of the new power plant was made on Wednesday evening, the new plant alone lighting the town and surrounding district, as well as running the pictures. The smooth running of the new machinery is a matter for congratulation to ail concerned, including Mr. Moss, the engineer, who has spared no pains in bringing about this most gratifying result. THE GYMNASIUM. The gymnasium recently 'fitted up by the Football and Hockey Clubs has made a most auspicious opening. The players are fortunate in obtaining the services c.f Messrs. Law and Brown (late physical instructors in His Majesty’s Forces), who | have been appointed honorary instructors. Some thirty members were put through I “physical jerks” by those in charge, and j the vim and snap of the exercises spoke volumes for both the instructors and the pupils. It is to be hoped that the training operations will not be a temporary spasm, for if persevered in the work done cannot fail to improve ffie fitness of the athletes. When solid business men of the cities are prepared to spend two and three guineas per quarter to receive just the same instruction in physical exercise as the local lads are offered gratis it is surely up to the latter to see to it that enthusiasm does not wane as the season advances. So far the four new shower baths h?.ve not been christened, but it is safe to prophesy that the trainees will be pleased to perform that ceremony before Messrs. Law and “Brownie” have finished with them.
