A WAR MEMORIAL.

The decision of the New Plymouth War Memorial Committee to erect a cenotaph opposite the railway station as a memorial to the men from New Plymouth who fell in the war, will give general satisfaction. The form of the memorial is an eminently appropriate one, and the site chosen could not be more suitable, being, as it is, right at the gateway of the town. It is also proposed to erect memorial gates at the entrance to the sports ground of Pukekura Park, and to have the names of the fallen inscribed thereon. An appeal is to be made for £6OOO, the estimated cost of the memorial. In a district that gave so generously to the several funds during the war, the raising of this sum, even in times like the present, should not be a difficult matter, provided the work of collecting is thoroughly organised. No doubt facilities will be provided for all to contribute according to his or her means, bearing in mind always that the memorial is one common to rich and poor alike. It is quite unnecessary to stress the importance and worthiness of the object. We feel that everyone in the community needs only to be approached tb give according to his or her means. The only regret one has in connection with the proposal is that it was not made long ago. There have, of course, been difficulties in the way, but these have now al! been removed. The representative public meeting held recently was manifestly in accord in pushing on with the erection of memorials, and the committee appointed thereat have been similarly unanimous in regard both to the form it should take and the site; so that now it but remains for the town and district to be thoroughly organised, and the necessary funds to do honor to our brave dead in a manner worthy of their sacrifice should be forthcoming.
