POPPY DAY.

The association of the red poppy of France with the observance of Anzac Day may not seem to have any special significance a<3 regards the commemora.tion of the Gallipoli campaign, yet, it, in reality, ’broadens the conception of the war services of the gallant Austra-lian-New Zealand Army Corps in the whole of the operations of the war. Moreover, there is the additional reason that the people both of France and the British Empire can join in the observance of a day of memory for the glorious dead and the cause for which they gave their lives. Probably the broadening of the commemoration by the use of artificial poppies, made by children in the devastated areas of France, will appeal with much force to the humanitarian side of the people of the Dominion, because it not only becomes a tribute to the dead, but a help to the living. The poppies that are to fie sold in New Plymouth to-day will in the first plax?e provide recompense for the struggling families in France from whence they emanate, and the remainder of the proceeds will be devoted to the relief of the unemployed ex-soldiers in the Dominion. Two more worthy causes cannot be imagined, and there should not be a man, or child who would not be proud, As well as pleased, to buy a poppy to-day in readiness for Anzac Day (next Tuesday). This binding of a touching thought of the living and the dead makes the anniversary more sacred than if only the dead were held in remembrance, and it should be a point of honor for every citizen to show that neither ’have been, or ever will be, forgotten.
