THE WOOL MARKET.

SALE AT CHRISTCHURCH. A GOOD TONE. By Telegraph. —Press Association Christchurch, Last Night. The first Christchurch wool sale commenced at 8 o’clock to-night, about a third of a catalogue of 22,000 odd bales being put through. The offering included a good representative selection of Canterbury wools. There was a good showing of lialfbred, a number of station clips being forwarded. The choicest clips, of halfbred will be offered tomorrow, but to-night’s demand for this class provided keen competition. All round values for halfbred were up on the first sale of last season by quite lid per lb and on the final sale in June of 2d to 2Ad. All half bred wool tonight was competed for with avidity, particularly by local mills, which secured the bulk of the best clips, and by Bradford buyers. American competition was not noticeable to any extent during the sale, the first 3000 bales of wool suiting their requirements being largely included in later catalogues. Crossbred wools were not competed, for. Orders were apparently available for this class, but within very conservative limits. However, very little of the’offering was passed, the clearance being equal to approximately 95 per cent, of the total catalogue. Very little merino was forward, but it was brighter than at the June sale. Altogether the sale, excepting for coarse wool, is cheering so far as it has gone. Some of the best prices to-night were: Merino 15 Ad. 14Ad, lowest 13|d; half bred 15M. 14? d, 14 }d,. 14d, 13Jd, a good deal at 9Ad to 11 Ad, and down to 8d for poor conditioned wool; Southdown made lOd to 12M; Corriedale 10Ad to 12|d; three-quarter bred 104 d, IOJd, 9d, 7£d, down to 5d for low quality; Romney made to 6}d; crossbred, several super lines at 71d, down to 6£d, 5Ad and 3-Jd, the bulk about sd; half bred pieces made to 9|d. three-quarter bred s|d, bellies 6|d. The sale stopped at mid night and goes on to-morrow.
