INGLEWOOD SCHOOL.

BREAKING-UP CEREMONY, DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A very large gathering oi the pupils took place in the Inglewood school yesterday afternoon, for the final event of the year—the prize-giving, speech-mak-ing, and breaking-up for the Christmas holidays. Mr. J. Thomas, headmaster, said that the prizes to be distributed were probably only a small part of the credit due to the pupils of the school. They had been allotted to their recipients on marks gained, but so close had those prize-winners been pressed that it had gone hard with the judges not to give awards to many more. Mr. Thomas referred to the year’s work at the school, which, taken, altogether, had been very satisfactory. The inspector’s reptJTts had been very good, and although there had been serious absentees amongst the pupils through unavoidable causes, sickness chiefly, good results had been secured. He very briefly thanked the teaching staff of the school -for their earnest and enthusiastic hard work and support throughout the past year. He referred to the loss the school had suffered through the death of Miss Riordan, who for so many years had, with yemarkably good results, controlled the infant division of the school.

Mr. J. R. Sutherland (Mayor) distributed the prizes, prefacing his labors by congratulating the teachers on the very good reports that the inspectors had given of the school. He mentioned the loss the staff had sustained by the retirement and death of Miss Riordan, who. had done wonderfully effectual wbrk with the infant side. He also referred to the promotion of Miss Leslie, who had been a hard-working member of the staff. Mr. Sutherland explained that because the final results of the proficiency examination were not yet officially to hand, the special prizes for dux 1 , etc., given by Messrs. Jan Grant, A. Kennedy, P. Glenie, and Mrs. Winter, could not be dealt with. PRIZE LIST. The prize list is; Primer 3. —Elsie Martin 1 (prize given by Mrs. M. Sutherland), Edna Petch 2, Bessie Rogers 3, Fred Blackburn 4.
