N.P.—ONEHUNGA SERVICE.
WITHDRAWAL OF THE RARAWA. The Rimu has recently been put on the New Plymouth-Onehunga service in place of the Rarawa. On the fact becoming known some time ago, the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce addressed a letter to the gmieral manager of the Northern Company'enquiring how tong the diminutive vessel would be on the service, stating that the vessel was inadequate, that its running would have the effect of discouraging traffic, and expressing the hope that it would not be kept on the run longer than was absolutely necessary. The manager has replied in the following terms: In. reply I have to advise you that the annual inspections of the Manaia and Rarawa are now due, and the latter vessel is required for the East Coast to relieve the Manaia for a fortnight, and then undergo her own inspection. Wc anticipate that this will take about five weeks. We have arranged for this work to take place at this time of the year when the trade to New Plymouth is at its lowest, and the Rimu is quite able to cope with the service at the present time, as there is a general depression of shipping right throughout the Dominion. I can assure you that she will not remain in the running longer than we can possibly help.
