UNEMPLOYMENT.
government relief works. Mr. E. Dixon, M.P., has received the following letter from the Hon. J. G, Coates, Minister of Public Works dealing with unemployment relief works: Dear Sir,—l have to acknowledge receipt of your telegram of 30th ultimo, euggesting that some unemployed from Havvera be placed at work on the le Roti—Opunake railway. In reply I have to state that I am issuing instructions with this eml in view. With regard to the complaints of returned soldiers to the effect that they are compelled to report to the sergeant of police, I think if it were pointed out that tiley are not required to report to the sergeant of police as such, but are reporting to the local representative of the Labor Department, who ‘in this case. Imppens to be the police sergeant, the difficulty would be overcome. The arrangement is that returned soldiers should report to the repatriation officials; if the returned soldiers insisted on so reporting, it would probably involve a visit to Wanganui or some other centre, as I understand that tlie department is not represented at Hawera. In tlie circumstances I think they should report to the local labor ogent, even though lie he the sergeant of police. Yours faithfully, J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works.
