SUPREME COURT.
NAPIER SESSIONS. By Telegraph —Press Association. Napier, June 7. The sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day. Mr. Justice Reed was congratulated by the Hawke’s Bay bar on his recent appointment. Addressing the Grand Jury his Honor commented on the fact that three sexual cases were included on the calendar. Napier was not alone, as there seemed to be an increase throughout the Dominion. Napier, Last Night. Two charges of indecent assault on girls of tender years were proved at the Supreme Court to-day before Mr. Justice Reed. Several adult witnesses swore they had seen Joseph Simms commit an indecent assault on a little girl at the Hastings racecourse. In the second case the accused, Michael Cuddihy, a man between 70 and SO years of age, who assaulted a girl aged six, pleaded that at his age a man was not subject to moral lapses, but His Honor pointed out that in most eases of this kind the offenders were men who had reached that age. Both accused were remanded for sentence. William James McKain, a. postal cadet, was found guilty of opening letters. He will be sentenced to* morrow, INVERCARGILL SESSIONS. Invercargill, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, Frank Dynasky, for breaking and entering, received. three years’ probation. Rooert L. Beckham, for theft, was similarly dealt with, both to be prohibited. Thomas George Cartwright was acquitted of a charge of arson, but found guilty of making a. false declaration in his claim on an insurance company. He was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment.
