As illustrating the growth .and expansion of Auckland, the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Guuson, quoted some figures when speaking at a supper tendered on Thursday evening by the City Council to Mr. A. .T. Entrieau, He 1 said that when Mr. jßntriean first joined the Council, in 1808, the population of the city was 37,000, while to-day it was 08,000; the area of the. city acres against 7300 acres; the annual ratable value of the city was ,-6313,000, as against £1,250.000 to-day; t.he revenue was only £63,000, as compared with £783,000 last year and an estimated total of £1,000,000 this year.
