The Minister of Labor has informed Mr. R. Masters M.P., that six houses had been allotted to Stratford by the Housing Department, and that a contract had been let to Mr. Tong, of Hiiwera, for the construction of concrete blocks for the houses. These blocks should be constructed in the course of two months, and in the meantime arrangements would be made for the balance of the work of erection.
About twenty members of the Stratford A. and P. Association attended as a working bee a't the showgrounds today and did a considerable amount of work preparing for the spring show on November 24 and 25. A 'he new cattle pavilion is now completed and is a splendid addition to the appointments on the grounds. Entries are coming to hand very satisfactorily, and prospective exhibitors are reminded that the last day for receiving entries is November 13. The patients at the Stratford Hospital were treated to an enjoyable musical programme last night, items being given by the Egmont Club orchestra, and songs by Mesdaines K. F. Hollands and >S. Robinson, and Messrs. G. T. Walters and J. S. Rowe,
The young helpers of the Ngaere Habitation got to work towards the end of October, and as a result of a systematic canvass of the district the sum of £22 3s Od was collected for Dr. Baniado's Homes, which is very creditable for a small country district. The boxes, when opened, yielded £1 13s Id, a total of £23 ICs 7d. Following are details of totals of collections and boxes: —Alice Wickliam £(i 5s (id, Florence Walker £ i 7s lid, Stanley Bond £3 4s 3d, Jean Tarrant £2 Mi's 2d, Eric Lambert £2 4s 7d, Leonard Harrison £1 15a od, Ngaere W.C.T.I'. £.l 2s Od, Iris Tarrant £1 0s 2d, Margery Bocoek 17s Bd, Lily Lambert 2s lOd. The bo.\cs were opened at the school on the !)th November, and the sum raised was immediately sent to Mr. H. A. Gold, Messrs. Gold and Arcus, public accountants, Wellington, who is treasurer for Dr, Barnardos Homes in the Wellington district. The children also donated £1 10s 7d to the Church Army Orphans' Christmas Dinner Fund. •Mr. C. A. Gray has resigned from the position of secretary to the Stratford Returned Soldiers' Association. The P.A.C. advertise particulars of an important sale of carpets and crockery to be held on Saturday at 12.45 p.m. Photographs taken now can be finished in good time for posting before Christmas.
