DISTRICT NEWS.

WAI-TOI-TOI. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) At the usual mohthly meeting of the Wal-toi-tot Dairy Company, held last week, advice w..s received from the board of control to tecure as much firewood as possible for fuel, as the extreme shortage of coal was likely to continue," and supplies would probably be very limited. The company has decided to join the Taranaki Progressive League, the Chairman (Mr. J. Phillips) being appointed to set. as its representative. Ideal weather for the growth of pass has been experienced during the past few days, the warm rains and absence of wind being Just what Is wanted, and the change In the pastures Is most noticeable. The cons are tlao responding to the Improved conditions, and the supply to the factory Is Increasing daily. I understand that Mr. A. H. Halcombe is putting on a second herd of com on that portion of his Ferngrova property adjoining Mosrangi road, and will supply cream to the North Taranaki factory. Mr. Gould, of Waltara, paid his usual fortnightly vißit to Wal-tol-tol 011 Friday evening last, and gave a most Interesting address In the school-room. Several hyrnnß were sung in the course of the evening, Miss Mabel Phillips presiding at the organ. It is expected that the additions to the local school yiH be completed .within a fortnight. On Friday evening last a very enjoyable dance was held in the Okoke School-room. Tte music was supplied by Mr. J, Brough, assisted by Miss Hoskin and Messrs. L. and K. Spurr, whilst Mr. Eric Ekdahl acted efficiently at M.C. The supper was provided by the ladles of the district, and was much appreciated. A\ the Invitation of Mr. A. H. Halcombe, of Ffcrngrove; a number of Frontiersmen of the district spent a most enjoyable social .evening on Saturday last. Had the weather lwen unore favorable, visitors from Waltara and New Plymouth would have been present. During the evening cards and music were indulged in, and at the conclusion all present expressed their pleasure at tte hospitable manner in which they had been entertained by Mr. Halcombe. In common with other portions 'of Taranaki, the Lwgue is gaining 111 strength dally In this district, and as Its aims and objects become more widely known, it is safe to predict that in the near future it will become one of the most powerful and useful organisations of its class in the Dominion. KAPONGA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Tuesday afternoon a number of mothers met at the residence of Mrs. H. McCarty to make her a little presentation as a mark of appreciation of the good work and success she tad achieved in the imusical examination of her children. Mr. Schllßky conducted the examination, and Knponga can well be proud of the results, for every pupil of both Mrs. McCarty And Miss Bennie passed, while several were awarded honors. On behaif of those present, Mrs., .1. Guy, in a short speech, handed' to Mrs. McCarty a neat gold brooch set with gem 3, after which Mrs. McCarty suitably replied. Afternoon tea was then handed round. An enjoyable and successful Leap Year dance was teld in the Kaponga Hall last week, when there was a large gathering. Mrs. law and Miaseß Faull and Foster capably carried out the duties of M's.C., while the music was supplied by Mr. and Mrs. McCarty and Mrs. Sounness. The Hockey Club concert and dance, to be held on October 21'st, is being eagerly looked forward to, especially as the local girls are providing all the entertainment. The next most Interesting event here will be the crowning ceremony of the Queen, ; which takes place shortly. We havo had an exceptionally wet week of rilin, and la3t Wednesday afternoon there was such a deluge that there was a large washout on the Eltliam Road, and so all traffic for a few days had to' go via Palmer and '?lanaia Roads. At present the Palmer Bond la in a rough state, and it !s high time the Council did something to improve this important road. The recent warm rain has tad a very beneficial effect on all pastures, which were becoming very short and scarce. OKATO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The death occurred, i.n New Plymouth, of Mrs. Ben. Gray, an old resident of Okato. The deceased lady has had a long illness, having teen an inmate of a private hospital for some months, and her death was not, unexpected. Tte ijuterment took place at the local cemetery, the Rev. Addenbrooke officiating, the very wet weather preventing many who would have liked to pay their last respcits from attending. ?he wife of Mr. W. H. Squires, a former ] resident of Okato, passed away last week. Mrs. Squires was quite a young woman, and leaves a young family. Much sympathy Is felt for Mr. Squires in his bereavement. I The local school received a visit from Dr. Elizabeth Gunn recently. The chief trouble, as at most schools, seems to bo that the majority of the children's teeth need attention. The doctor expressed pleasure at the Improvement in this direction, she being able to see a marked difference in tlm children's teeth since her last visit, which shows that the parents appreciate these periodical visits and evidently endeavor to carry out the doctor's recommendations. At the saleyards a distinct, improvement Is teing made. A shelter shed, which will accommodate a large number of buyers, Is being erected for the use of the auctioneers and the public in wet weather. Often the Bale has been seriously interfered with by the very w?t weather, but with this addition business can proceed under any conditions. The Tennis Club social was quite a success. Mr. Pearson supplied the' music In his usual most capable manner, and this, coupled with the good condition of tte floor and the excellent supper provided, made a most enjoyable evening. Mr. Guy Meredith has been appointed overseer for the Taranaki County Council. He has been foreman in this riding for a number of years, and in this capacity the Council loses a good man. His practical experience and sound road work should make him a success in his new position.
