RESTRICTING SPECULATION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 25. It is reported that the bank rate will be raised in the near future. This decision has been reached in the hope that large stocks of goods at present .being held back will be placed on the, market, thus reducing prices. It la stated that the Treasury is determined to make a serious effort to restrict the activities of speculators and compel merchants to disgorge accumulated stocks.—Reuler. LOW GRADE WOOL. Washington, Sept. 28. The Anmy Department will auction 3,000,OOOlbs. of Government-owned low grade combing and carding wool for the carpet frade on October 11. HIDE SALE. Dalgety and Co. Ltd. report: W© held our fortnightly sale of hides and tallow at Wellington last week, when we offered an average catalogue of all classes to a representative attendance of buyers.' Competition was keen throughout, and prices for ox and cow hides were on a par with those realised at last sale, whilst superior yearlings and calfskins advanced to %d. Tallow was firm at last sale's rates.
