A cable, from Sydney says that Mr. W. M. Hughes (Federal Premier), whilst riding in Centennial Park, Sydney, was thrown heavily from his liorse and was stunned. Later he was able to keep his engagements. '■ Mr. J. Milne, late of New Plymouth, and now general manager of the Wellington Meat Export Co. has left on a holiday visit to Melbourne. He is accompanied by Mrs. Milne. Mr. 0. Hawken, M.P., and Mrs. Hawken left Wellington on Saturday for Auckland, Mrs. Hawken having received a most unexpected telegram announcing the death of her mother. Messrs. W. D. Powdrell, W. T. Jennings, and Ji. Masters, M.P.'s, spent the week-end in Taranaki. Mr. Powdrell returned to Wellington yesterday, and Messrs. J'ennings and Masters return today. A Press Association telegram from Nelson reports that Mr. Apps Hocton, who recently celebrated his 100 th birthday, died at Dovedale. He was one of Nelson's earliest settlers, arriving in 1842. He first lived in the city, but for over 40 years he has been farming at Dovedale. An outstanding figure in the Marlborough community and pastoral industry, in the person of Mr. Charles de Vere Teschemaker Shute, passed away at his residence at Avondale on ' Sunday (says a telegram from Blenheim). He was chairman of the New Zealand WoolGrowers' Association, was a member of the provincial council, and a member of the Wairau Road Board for several years, and .local director of the Farmers' Co-operative Association. This deceased was eighty-Jive years of age. He attended the wool conference at Wellington a month ago, anjl on its conclusion he proceeded <to Christchurch, returning to Marlborough overland. This extended journey told severely on his health, and when he reached home he was laid aside by illpess, which Droved fatal,
