BOROUGH COUNCIL.

GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The Nejv Plymouth Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mavqr (Mi'. J lls . Clarke), Crs. W. J. Haydin, E j. Hill, ,V. Griffiths, W. F. Short, V\ x. Collis, A. S. Brookw, and R. L. Pai'Kiu. BOILING-DOWN WORKS. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Minister of Lands declining to insert a' clause in the Waahing-Up Bill permitting the council to establish boiling-down works, and intimating that the matter should be dealt with by way of a local Bill. , It was decided that the preparation of a Bill for the puv|i ises indicated be undertaken, with a view to its introduction at the next session of Parliament. TAXING MUNICIPALITIES. The council endorsed the protest of the Auckland City Council against the proposed increase of the tax on municipal debentures, and also approved of the Dunedin City Council's protest against the proposal of the Government to levy income-tax on the profits of municipal trading ,departments.
