It is reported from Sydney that Mr. Alfred Hill, the New Zealand composer, intends to settle in Los Angeles, California. The President of France has conferred upon Colonel the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes (Minister for Defence), the distinguished Order of the Legion of Honor. The deaths arc recorded of three early settlers of Nelson—Mr. F. Healey, aged 72, Mrs. Charles Noble, 73 years, and Mr. James Grahame, who was. 73 years of age. The Rev. B. Dudley lias been appointed chairman of the Taranaki-Wanganui district of the Methodist Church, in place of Rev. Blamiros, who has resigned that office for health reasons. While cranking her motor car in Opunake on Tuesday afternoon Mrs. R. Campbell, junr., had the misfortune to break her right arm above the wrist. The death occurred at Greymouth of Mr. Alan A. Adams, for 30 years rector of the Greymouth District High School. He leaves one son, Captain Alan Adams, who was a noted footlaller, and represented Otago and the West Coast many times. The death has occurred at Waihi of Mr. Robert Haszard at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. A. T. Kenrick, in his 87th year. , His sons are Messrs. H. D. Haszard (Commissioner of Crown Lands at Christcluireh), M. F. Haszard (surveyor, of Waihi), and T, R. ITaszard (of Chile). His daughters are Mrs. F. Pollen (Tahana) and Mrs. A. T. Kenrick (Waihi). His .Majesty the King has been pleased to award the Distinguished Conduct Medal to Corporal T. R. Crocker, 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment; Com-Sergeant-Major J, H. Foster, 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment; Sergeant S. Gaston, Ist Battalion, Wellington Regiment; and Company SergeantMajor W. H. James, Ist Battalion, Wellington Regiment, for conspicuous gallantry when in action. The death is announced of Mr. R. R. McGregor, one of the earliest residents of Thames. During the boom days he w.as in business in a large way as a. trader, auctioneer, and sharebroker, and (ater as a gum-buyer. He promoted several mining ventures, doing very well out of the Golden Cross at Waitekauri. Deceased was 81 years of age. Dr. Young, who is a Hawera boy, went Home about thirteen years ago and qualified at Glasgow University. After a year in hospitals he returned to New Zealand, and the war breaking out just at that time, he volunteered and was on active service throughout the war period. After being demobilised he spent a year in hospital and then again returned to Hawera. Dr. Sloan, whom Dr. Young is succeeding, has been a resident of Hawera for over twenty years. He and Mrs. Sloan will be settling in the South Island.—Star.
Mr. Walter Cooper, whilst working on Mr. S. R. Feaver's farm on the Opua Road, took suddenly ill on Tuesday morning, and died on Wednesday. Deceased, who was 55, was a quiet, industrious, hard-working man, and respected by his neighbors. He had been in the district for about 15 years, being at one time manager of Mrs. Dew's farm on the Tipoka Road, Pungarehu. His wife predeceased him by some 14 years, and his only sou was killed at the war. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fred Kirk, of Pungarehu.
