I A fire at Senior foundry, Freeman's Bay, owned by Clare and Warner, resulted in a door and doorstep being burned, further damage being averted by the fire brigade. It was subsequently discovered that the,fire was evidently the work of an incendiary. There wa% the charred remains of a kerosene case behind the door, and two large belts slashed with a sharp instrument. APPROPRIATING MILITARY FUNDS. Palmerston N., Sept. 23. James Alexander Will, formerly pay clerk to the Awapuni military camp, pleaded guilty to failing to account for £155 12s Id received from the command paymaster, and was committed to the Supreme Court in Wellington for sentence.

TAXATION PROPOSALS. Wellington, Sept. 23. Replying to a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce Conference, Mr. Massey said that the taxation proposals had been referred to the Public Accounts Committee. The Bill before the House was the result of the labors of the committee. It was possible that in some respects some of the clauses might, not qifffio expres* the opinions of the committee, and during their progress through the House would require to be amended.

A BOROUGH COUNCIL FIASCO. Carterton, Sept. 23. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. J. W. Smith) and seven councillors of the Featherston Borough (Council resigned in n body yesterday evening as an answc; to a by-election by which a member oi the council, who had been suspended for alleged insulting conduct and who' had • resigned without withdrawing -the remarks objected to, was ~~ returned again. The sitting councillors considered such action on the part of the electors to be a vote of no-confidence in them, and they therefore resigned and decline to seek re-election.

Difficulty is 'expected in obtaining new councillors.
