WIRELESS WONDERS.
MUSIO AND yOICES BY TELE£HONU HEARD FROM 5630 JULES. ' By Telegraph.—Press etsflnlsttsn - Auckland, Lttt Kight. In the course of the voyage of the Waitemata from San Francisco to Auckland, a demonstration of the possibilities of wireless telephony wa» made in ft very striking manner. ! When the vessel was near the Great Barrier, the wireless operator (Mr. Hartley) heard quite distinctly voice* transmitted on a wave of 460.metres from the high power radiophone etation at Avalon, which is situated 160 miles from San Francisco. The vessel was thus receiving audible message! at a distance of 5030 miles. The high power etation mentioned embodies a new system of wireless telephony which enables a person in his private residence to speak by radio through. the ordinary land telephone .system' without the necessity of using tie radiophone direct. Mr. Hartley also heard radio musio at intervals from'theatres in San Francisco while the vessel was off the American coast. ' The measiipf transmission was by wireless telephone, and the music of the orchestra and tie voices of the singers could be heard quite clearly. . b
