Captain J. B. Rainey, Ney Zealand marine superintendent of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line of steamers, is on a visit to New Plymouth. Mr. Colin R. Munro, headmaster of Remuera (Auckland) Public School, for fourteen years, has been appointed an inspector under the Education Department, with 'headquarters at Auckland. Mr. A. E. Meredith, Government Land Valuer, has received notice of his transfer from New .Plymouth to Rotorua. Mr.'T. Sheehy, Crown Lands Ranger, of Taumarunui, has been transferred to New Plymouth in succession to Mr. Meredith. The Premier of New South Wales (Mr. .T. Storey) has reiterated his denial of the rumor that he was willing jkb become a candidate for the vacant position of Agent-General in London. Mr. Storey added that it will probably be early next year before the vacancy is filled, ami Sir Timothy Coghlau will continue to net in the meantime.
Mr. C. C Reado, formerly of Auckland, who delivered a series of town-planning lectures in various New Zealand centres a few years ago, has been engaged by the Government of the Malay States for a brief period at a salary of £2OOO a year, in addition to travelling and other expenses, Mr. Reade has taken a prominent part in the promotion of the townplanning movement in South Australia, and at present holds the position of Government Town Planner in that State. Another of New Zealand's old identities passed away in Wanganui on Monday morning, in his eightieth year, in tho person of Mr. W. Stookwell, who arrived from England in 1887, and was for a time engaged in farming at Tataraimaka, and afterwards at Pihama and the Hunter Road, Eltham. He was a resident of Hawera for fifteen years. He then removed to Wanganui,' where he had lived for the past eighteen years. A widow and four sous—Messrs. George (Whaugamomona), Robert (Wanganui), Harry (Whangarei) and Thomas (Hawera), are left. News has been received in Dunedin of tho death at sea, on board the s.s. Moghiley, of Dr. W. L. Christie, who was the first student to win the medical degree of the University of New Zealand. He gained his M.8., Ch.B. in 1887, and his M.D. three years later. After practising for a short period at Outram and at Milton he proceeded Home for further study and took his P.R.C.S. in London. Dr. Christie, who was the eldest son of the late William Christie of "Keithmore," Warepa, leaves a widow in England, and a married daughter, and is survived by a number of brothers and sisters in Otago.
