GENERAL ITEMS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 21, 9.45 p.m. * Sydney, Sept. 21. A severe earthquake was recorded at Riverview, seismic waves rolling in for five honrß. The shock was probably most severely felt in the New Hebrides. ' Sydney, Sept. 21. A hitch has. arisen respecting the appointment of Mr. James to the judiciary. The Supreme Court Bench already contains a full complement, but Mr. Justice Sly, who is on twelve months leave of absence, retires in December. It was suggested that Mr. James should be appointed acting-judge till the vacancy occurred. Melbourne, Sept, 21. The chairman of the Broken Hill South Company at the annual meeting said that •seventeen months' idleness meant that £12,000,000 had been lost to the industry. The outlook for an early resumption was hopeful, as soon at Mr. Justice Edmund's finding is announced. It is understood that the Labor Party will test the House of Representatives on the taxation proposals. The repatriation commissioners have granted special pensions of £4 per week to soldiers with double amputations alove the knees. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
