UNIVERSITY DEGREES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 13. At a special meeting of the University Senate the following degrees were conferred: Master of Arts, Norman Alexander Byrne (Victoria); Bachelor of Arts, Albert Jackson (Victoria), Francis Gerard Maskell (Auckland); Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Arama Thomas Begg, Norman Francis Boag, Laurence Manning King, Eric Howard Manley Luke, Allen Bruce Roy, Henry Charles Tod (all Otago); Bachelor of Laws, Reginald Vincent Kay (Victoria); Bachelor of Engineering (civil), William Julius Hyde (Canterbury). INCREASED SUPERANNUATION. Wellington, Sept. 13. Replying to a deputation of superannuated Civil Servants who asked for an increase in the present allowance, the Prime Minister said he understood the position thoroughly. He wished to do something for the superannuated Civil Servants this session, but was not able,to tell them yet what it would be. As a matter of fact, he was waiting for the end of the second financial quarter at the end of this month to see what he was in a position to suggest. _ Anything he did would commence with, the lowest paid man and woman, for they were the ones most urgently in need of assistance. Ho could commence with the lowest and go as high as he could. Anything ho asked Parliament to do would depend upon the state of the public accounts at the end of this month, and it would not bo permanent but for as long as the increased cost of living continued and as long as the finances of the country could stand it. Parliament would be asked to assist to the best of its ability those suffering hardships. TRAVELLER'S MUDDLED ACCOUNTS. Auckland, Sept. 13. In the Police Court' Henry John Walters, traveller for the Colombo} Tea Company, Dunedin, appeared to answer a charge in respect to a shortage of £4B in his payments to the company. His counsel, isaid that the matter was more one of muddled accounts than theft. Accused said that when he was dismissed there were three weeks' wages and some commission owing to him and he had asked the company to meet him with an arrangement for repayment of shortages. He admitted that the company lhad met him twice before on shortages of this kind. Accused was .convicted and admitted to probation for two years, on condition that the amount owing above the letained wages should be repaid at the rate of 10s per week.
