VOICE IN GOVERNMENT. COMPOSITION OF THE PARLIAMENT By Telegraph,—Press Assa.—Copyright. Received Jan. 9, 11.55 p.m. Allahabad, Jan. 9. The Government has provisionally de% cided on the distribution of a hundred seats in the new Indian Parliament. In the provinces there will be a heavy preponderance of Indians over Europeans. The total in the Legislative Council will be:-
Indians ~, ~ 49 Moslems ...,,,..,, 29 Sikhs 2 Landowners 7 Whites 9 Indian Commerce .• 4 For the Council of State it is pro> posed that the elected scats will be:— Indians 21 Moslems 9 Sikhs ........... 1 Chambers of Commerce ... 2
It is proposed that the elections to the Council will be direct, and the local Government will frame the franchise so as to yield an electorate composed of men of wealth and position. These proposals will be submitted to an informal advisory committee, which will be instituted for the purpose of consultation and reform proposals, and criticism will bo invited from various political bodies. —Aus.-N.Z.
