THE FLAXMILLING INDUSTRY.
QUESTION OF SHEETING. (By Wire.—Own Correspondent ) Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Field (Otaki) asked in the House to-day if it was true that the Government last year was offered a considerable sum of money in England by way of loan for the purchase of steamers trading to New Zealand, and that the offer was declined? He said the matter was important in view of the difficulties that were facing the flaxmilling industry. Owing to the shortage of freights, the Industry was threatened with disaster.
Mr. Massey said he appreciated the Importance of the industry, but the lack of shipping was not confined to New Zealand. He had made representations to the Imperial authorities regarding the need of shipping space for hemp and tow. "The statement regarding the offer of a loan is not correct, or, if correct, I have not heard of it," added Mr. Massey. "I don't think anything of that sort could take place without my know, ledge." Mr. Field: Cannot you get any of these German ships? Mr. Massey: We have had some of them here already.
