WIDNES BY-ELECTION.
FISHER DEFEATED. By Telegraph —Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 14, 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 13. The Widnes election resulted: Arthur Henderson 11,404 votes, F. M. B. Fisher 10.417.—Au5.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Mr. Henderson's victory caused a sensation in the Congress, which immediately adjourned, the delegates singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
HENDERSON'S RETURN WELCOMED. Received Sept. 15, 1.10 a.m. London, Sept. 13. The newspaper* agree that the Laborit.es are entitled to claim the result of the Widnes election in support of the demand for the withdrawal from Russia and i he nationalisation of mines. All welcome Mr. Henderson's return to the House or Commons, which the Daily Telegraph points out the December election robbed of too many wh««e abilities and influence would have greatly added to its authority. At the last elections the voting was as follows: Colonel Hull Walker (Coalition l.nionist.) 11.01."), T. Williamson (Labor) 7,821. Mr. F. M. P., Fisher, '.vho sat in the New Zealand House of Representatives from l!)0f> (ill 1!)14, was Minister for Customs and Marine from 1012 until his defeat at the general elections in 1014. He then sought re-election for Wellington Central, but was defeated by the late Mr. E. Fletcher. The voting was: Fletcher C2OG, Fisher 2879.
